Now is the Time for Better Government

For so many years and various administrations, our government has distanced itself from the people of this country. It is to the point where it is reasonable to ask - "Does our government work for us, or only in their self interest and big business?" Politics is a game of money and power. It is a zero sum game only in the fact that government wins and we lose.

We need to force the government to accept and adhere to basic principles from NOW forward.

*****

Those principles are:

Government that adheres to the Constitution as written by our forefathers,

Government OF, BY, and FOR the people, and not of greedy self-interest and alliance with big money contributers,

Fiscal responsibility - Reduce unnecessary spending for Pork or special interest projects which only serve to bloat the budget. And again, stop buying favors from big money contributers. This means, trim the budget, spend within those limits, and be personally accountable for any unforeseen overage,

Get control of the FED or do away with it entirely. Trillions are 'lost' or unaccounted for with no explanation. What happened to the nine trillion that was unaccounted for? The FED has a strangle hold on our economy and our government is either afraid to touch it, or is being bought out,

Sever the connection between Big Pharma and the government especially the FDA. Stop letting people suffer and die for profits gained from the association of the FDA and Big Pharma. Medicine has come a long way in treating many illnesses including cancer without the necessity of cruel pain and suffering brought on by highly toxic drugs and treatments such as chemo and radiation. When people have to pay enormous amounts of money for pills to treat the symptoms but NOT alleviate the cause of the suffering, that only serves to enhance the huge profits of the pharmaceutical companies,

In conjunction with the above, it should be illegal for anyone who has connections with Big Pharma to be placed in a government position of responsibility where decisions can be made or influenced as to what standard of medicine is upheld. Proven methods - even where complete cancer remission is possible, is blocked, hindered, or discredited because it is not in the best interest of Big Pharma,

Any member of government, at any level or position, should be treated as a criminal for taking bribes of any kind from businesses or individuals. In this context, a bribe is any substantial money or favor received that can be used to influence that person's vote on a bill favorable to the business or individual involved. This is illegal in the corporate world, then why not in government!

*****

To all members of government, whether Federal, State, or Local, in whatever capacity, please read and understand your responsibilities as defined in The Patriot Declaration. Actually, ALL citizens of this country should read it along with several other documents penned by the founding fathers. I recommend the website www.essentialliberty.us for patriotic literature which should be read by all Americans - especially those persons in government.

We need a return to Civics classes in school so that children can understand what it means to be a citizen of this uniquely free society and understand that so many lives were lost or damaged by those who defended those freedoms.

We will never live in Utopia, but the United States is THE beacon of freedom to the world. To give up our position to a world government is to give up our lives to totalitarianism where, at a whim, our liberties, our monetary system, and our very lives will become meaningless in the world view. Aldous Huxley saw it coming in "Brave New World". And, the realization of '1984' is about 18 years off. We need to take back our government and become a society where people have value other than statistics.

We need to do it NOW! In my opinion, Ron Paul currently appears to be the only candidate that comes closest to these principles. Let's stop voting for the person with best clothes or hairdo. Every candidate is going to say what we want to hear. It is what is in the heart of the candidate that will define his/her principles. Find out what the person is REALLY like, and not some sound bite pushed by biased media. Remember, Hitler told the people of Germany what they wanted to hear. We all know were that led.

Crimes against the American public by our government

The most heinous crime against the American public by our government has been going on for many years.

I was diagnosed last month with stage IV cancer (mesothelioma) due to my exposure to asbestos in the Navy 1957-1961. Navy veterans were exposed since the ships were laden with asbestos for insulation and fire control. Many have already died from cancer not knowing the cause, and those like me, are not diagnosed until it has metastasized to other organs of the body. Although the government knew many years ago that Navy veterans and workers in boilers, brakes, gaskets, insulation, wallboard, and many other products were dying from mesothelioma because the government did not warn them of the danger or to watch for symptoms.

After several tests and a biopsy it was determined to be mesothelioma which is a specific form of lung cancer that attacks the lining of the lung. In any case, it takes a long time (as much as 50 years) to become apparent, and by that time it is terminal. As much as 30% of all victims are Navy veterans.

That is one thing that the government hid.

The standard treatments are surgery, chemo, and radiation which only prolongs the cancer but rarely is effective in removing it. And, even then, it does a lot of damage to areas of the body with fast growing cells such as the stomach, esophagus, hair and can cause infertility.

In doing research for the best treatment I came across a site that claims to have a high rate of CURE (complete remission) without the bad side effects. I was skeptical and found several articles that discredited it. Even my oncologist said it was bogus so I was ready to opt for chemo.

Then on further investigation, I found many people actually were 'cured' for 10 or more years with no recurrence. This included brain, lung, breast, prostrate, and many other forms of cancer including stage IV, even after their doctors told them that they had only weeks or months to live. I recommend that if any of you have cancer or have someone close who is dealing with cancer, to at least view the film
about The Burzynski Clinic

That is another thing that the government hid and continues to hide.

This film should convince you that cancer can be cured, and that the government does not want it to be known. They would prefer that people suffer and die rather than cut off billions from the big pharmaceutical companies who pay off the FDA to keep their expensive and often failed drugs on the market. How many times have we seen major ads for a 'new' medicine only to find out months or years later that it caused serious side-effects including cancer and death. Dr. Burzynski has been persecuted for more than 30 years, and threatened with jail. worse than the Communist government that he grew up in. Then his patents were stolen by an employee that left and went to Elan Pharmaceuticals who then proceeded to re-patent his medications.

He has fought our government and 'Big Pharma' over 6 attempts to discredit him and destroy his credibility even while he was having great success in treating late stage cancers when standard medicine and drugs were not effective.

Obviously, I am going to his clinic in Houston for treatment. Even though there is no guarantee of a cure, I will write in later blogs of the results. If you know of someone with cancer, do not give up. There is hope.

My goal is that once I am hopefully cured of this cancer, I intend to testify before Congress of the tragedy that our government is imposing upon us and demand that action be taken to stop the greed and help the people of this country. Obamacare is a joke compared to this. It only serves to perpetuate the business of medicine as usual when we can save billions of dollars and save the lives and suffering of so many people.

Who is Barack Obama?

For as long as I can remember there have always been conspiracy theories. Some are hype, but some are built on at least a degree of truth. In this case, it seems like there is overwhelming evidence that this President is not what he appears to be.

I can't ever recall having seen so many issues regarding a President's credibility. His far leftist associations such fascists as Bill Ayres and Reverend White, falsification of documents, appointments made which are questionable at best, policies which are counter to the needs of this nation, and the many books written regarding his dangerous policies as President bring into question "Who is he really?" and "What is his objective, if not the destruction of our Constitution?".

Our nation is on the precipice of failure, both monetarily and in our leadership as the beacon of Democracy to the free world. Obama's stewardship is steering us onto the rocks. Instead of moderating the discourse in Congress, he stuck to his leftist policies of more government control at the cost of fiscal responsibility. His response, as well as Congress, regarding the deadlock should have been "What is best for our country" instead of what is best for the party! The answer would have been, fix the immediate deficit by allowing for a temporary increase, but radically cut wasteful spending beginning NOW! That is what the nation was saying primarily through the voices of the Tea Party. But the liberal Senate and the President dug in their heels and ignored the will of the people. Had the President been a corporate CEO, the board would have had him fired for incompetency! But then he had no business experience.

Mr. President and members of our Congress, why are you there? Where is your moral compass. Is your whole purpose for serving to ensure your reelection to a cushy job and fat perks? You do not belong in the leadership of this country!

I am not a radical, but I love this country as do all of it's citizens. People gave up their lives to fight for our freedom and our Constitution. We don't want to lose our freedoms as government gains more control of our lives. I, like so many others in this greatest nation, are not willing to give up! Thomas Jefferson said that this country may need a revolution from time to time. The riots in Britain may be a precursor to our revolution. It is a shame that government has become blind to the will of the people.

Who are you Barack Obama? And what is your real agenda for this country? "Change" is NOT an answer. And we have already given up on "Hope".

Impeach the President?

Impeachable Offenses

Article II, Section 4 of the Constitution says, "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." In his report, Independent Counsel, Starr accuses President Clinton of committing eleven acts for which he could be removed from office by impeachment. Are any of those acts "Treason, Bribery, or other High Crimes and Misdemeanors?" Well, that's up to the members of the House of Representatives. According to Constitutional Lawyers, "High Crimes and Misdemeanors" are (1) real criminality -- breaking a law; (2) abuses of power; (3) "violation of public trust" as defined by Alexander Hamilton in the Federalist Papers. In 1970, then Representative Gerald R. Ford defined impeachable offenses as "whatever a majority of the House of Representatives considers it to be at a given moment in history." An excellent definition, Mr. Former President. In the past, Congress has issued Articles of Impeachment for acts in three general categories:

Exceeding the constitutional bounds of the powers of the office.

Behavior grossly incompatible with the proper function and purpose of the office.

Employing the power of the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain.

All three of the above offenses apply to Obama. His policies are definitely not aligned with the Constitution that he swore to uphold. All of his major agendas are leading us to financial ruin and Socialism. The House needs to consider impeachment even though the Liberal lap-dogs in the Senate will probably vote it down. This is a critical time in our government. We cannot tolerate more of this "Change" to Socialism.

Overwhelm the system

HEY CONGRESS! The American public doesn't give a damn which party you are in. Vote for what is BEST FOR THE PEOPLE! Stop playing politics with our future and do the job you were elected for. To protect the Constitution and do what is right. Screw the party politics! Most of you who are holding this country hostage will not be there next term anyway!

And as for "President" Obama, there is growing concern that his agenda is NOT in line with our Constitutional Republic. His policies and the Democrats who follow him like puppies are pushing us into socialism. Read this and you will see where "Change" is leading us! Overwhelm the system

Letter to Senator McCain

Senator McCain

Even though I am not a resident of Arizona, I watched with great interest your discussion with Sean Hannity regarding the budget crisis.
There are two entities who will suffer immediately from this "bizzaro" event: The economy, and the Tea Party. Eventually, this may cost President Obama the reelection, but at what cost to the people of this nation?

YES, spending must be brought to a "reasonable" limit (depending on who is defining reasonable), but MUST be manageable within the budget.

YES, we will need to increase the debt limit, and NOT in two phases which will start this "bizzaro" event all over again. Let President Obama fight for reelection, and let the American voters make that decision.

YES, Cut, Cap, and Balance is good for our future, but if it is a boulder in the path to a solution, then perhaps it should be a separate issue. Understandably, the Republicans, including Tea Party members, realize that the momentum is on their side at this time and need to make the most of this opportunity to get it passed. But we need to get unreasonable spending (pork, waste, golden/silver fleece) out of Congress.

YES, as you can tell, I am a Conservative fiscally and politically, and currently a member of the Tea Party because I believe in their principles. But the Liberal Senate and the President, as well as many Republicans in both houses, need to realize that politics is not a zero sum game. There is a third player in this game. It is the American people who are taking a dim view of our government and their "bizzaro" politics. Have we lost sight that this is a government "... of the people, by the people, and for the people ..." as Lincoln stated in his Gettysburg Address?

Stop the insanity!

Our government is out of control. For the first time in my 72 years, through wars, and economic downturns, I feel that our government is teetering on the edge of failure. Insistence on more spending and government control is NOT the answer.

Mr President and Liberal members of the Senate, please stop this game of chicken and do what is right for the citizens of this country! Our economy is in shambles, people are out of work and losing their homes. We are in the midst of a crisis, and you and the Liberal Senate want to keep pushing the agenda of bigger government and more spending. That does not work - unless of course your goal is Socialism. Is that what "Change" was about?

For many years, I tended to agree with conservative principles but would vote independently based on the "best person for the job" regardless of the party. Now I have joined and fully support the Tea Party and the Conservatives in Congress who hold the antitheses of your values. You were elected to support the Constitution, not to reshape government to suit your idea of what it "should be". Please stop turning this country into a welfare state where the citizens no longer have the right to choose their future. You are taking away our rights and choices in health care, business, and intruding more and more into our personal lives. Sounds like Socialism again.

Please stop the insanity! Government is "of the people, for the people, and by the people" and not for the personal agenda of one party. The Conservatives have it right with Cut, Cap, and Balance. No legislation is 100% but they have the correct idea to get government under control.

Media Ethics

Media Ethics?

Posted by Peter Strom on June 15, 2011 at 7:17pm
View Peter Strom's blog

Now that is an oxymoron! "Media Ethics". With so much divisiveness in the world today, religious wars, ethnic infighting, political differences, and my morality versus yours, we don't need the media to fuel the fires of hatred and ignorance with derision.

The Tea Party is often the target. Media often portrays the Tea Party, and those who support those views, as right wing fanatics. But, that also means we are getting more attention these days. We are no longer the little kid on the block - we are a force to be seriously reckoned with. Liberals and the RINOs, Republicans In Name Only, realize that we mean business and are serious about returning our government to the principles laid out by the founders and defined by the Constitution.

Our face to the public must be clear. We must stand united in principle and in action. We need to overcome the slander and lies by being steadfast and open in our base principles of smaller government, fiscal responsibility, and free markets. No one would deny those values. However, as expected in politics, the "other guys" are the bad guys regardless of which side of the political fence they are on. And when people on either side of that fence need a scapegoat, we are it. But do not be dismayed. I am sure that our founding fathers had many disagreements on policies and procedures, but they stuck to the truths that defined our nation to this day: Freedom, Government of, by, and for the people, and Free market Capitalism. Government needs to step back and get out of the way of the people who want to restore this country to those principles. Corruption, greed, and divisiveness have no place in government, and the Tea Party is willing to lead toward that goal.

Division among the Republican candidates is greatly weakening the chances for Conservatism. We need a strong, responsible leader who can rise above the rest. And that leader must abide to the Constitution as stated in the Oath of Office of the President. And that person must have as a primary goal during his or her administration, to get this economy back on track to solvency, and reject the socialist agenda of more government.

As with any grass roots movement, the Tea Party needs to be united in our core principles. That is what the public needs to see if we are to effect positive changes in government. That is what we stand for, and without those fundamental core principles we are just another radical fringe group to be ignored.

Capitalism is NOT a dirty word!

This great country was founded on Capitalism where people have the right, and the privilege, to create wealth for themselves and others through creative enterprise. It is the antithesis of socialism where government controls and stifles economic growth through unwieldy legislation and taxes.

We are the envy of the world because we have those freedoms engendered by Capitalism. Our Constitution was written by patriots who had the courage and foresight to see a great opportunity for a free and open society. They stood up against tyranny and control by a monarchy which would deny us those freedoms. We should not forget that many lives were lost in support of those freedoms for ourselves and other people around the globe.

Now we are returning to tyranny by a government bent on greater taxation, spending, and socialist policies. Do we need to again fight for our freedom? The early founders of our government anticipated that those in power would forget the principles laid out in our Constitution and even suggested that revolution would be necessary from time to time. Freedom of speech and public demonstration hopefully preclude the need for physical confrontation and bloodshed. But corruption and greed is still rampant in government at all levels and cannot be tolerated! We must continue to fight for our freedoms with each election and weed out those who ignore the will of the people. READ OUR LIPS ... NO NEW TAXES! Government spending must be reduced by getting rid of special interests, pork, and corruption.

Capitalism grows our economy, and wealth is not evil. Wealth acquired through hard work and entrepreneurship is what built this country. To destroy incentives of entrepreneurship by excessive taxation and our growing dependency of foreign money leads to increased welfare and the weakening of our economy.

The basic principles of good government are: Fiscal responsibility, free markets through Capitalism, and much less dependency on welfare. We are nearing the precipice of fiscal collapse. Government needs to understand that they are here primarily for the national defense, and to support the economy by ensuring fiscal responsibility. They are not here for the purpose of legislating morality, nor to pad their pockets with legislation to ensure their comfortable retirement and special privileges. Unions and government employees are citizens as well and must abide by the same laws and forgo special treatment.

The voters are angry, and will be watching as we approach the 2012 elections.

Fiscal Responsibility

Fiscal Responsibility -- What part of that statement is unclear to our governments - Federal, State, and Local?

Why are in this position to begin with? Where was Congress the last several years? This crisis has not just suddenly appeared and could not have been anticipated long ago. Congress, regardless of which party had control, continued to tax and spend for their favorite "pork" projects to help ensure their reelection and used taxpayer money at will for their special interests and perks, and to pad their retirement.

Yes, there are wars, and there were debts incurred, and there were "bailouts" (a whole 'nuther topic on stupidity). So let's blame the "other guy" whether a prior President, prior Congress, or the "other party"). Pogo said in one of the comic strips, "We have met the enemy, and it is us!" How true! WE are the cause of our failures, either through neglect, inattention, or just disregard for the rising problems.

Now we have reached a debt crisis point at ALL levels of government. Now, suddenly, as if there was no prior awareness, we (the unwary citizens) are being told that unless we allow the Federal government to raise the "debt ceiling", that we will be punished (my word) by higher taxes, stopping or limiting Social Security and Medicare payments (let's scare the elderly and disabled), face a financial crisis and economic recession with rising mortgage rates, higher food costs, more job loss (scare the rest of the public), and having our country's credit status downgraded.

The people of the United States, at each election, hope for the best. We put our faith and trust in those we elect to look out for us, and to vote for what is best for the people and NOT what is best for the party or self interest. I am sure that I express the feelings of the majority of intelligent voters, that our governments, at all levels, have let us down. It is up to Congress and the President to fix this problem with minimal impact to the citizens of this country, and to place fiscal responsibility as one of the primary goals of government in the future. That is why we elected you, so get on with it!

Stop the Piracy!

Why haven't we learned from Thomas Jefferson, Adams, and Madison when they had enough of the Barbary pirates and sent the Marines to end the intimidation and ransoming of ships on the high seas. The only difference is, before it was Libya on the shores of Tripoli, and today it is Somalia. In both cases, it is predominantly Muslim, and the same sort of ransoming was the modus operandi. And, undoubtedly, much of the ransom or booty is being used to fund Al Qaeda.

I strongly feel that we need to fight back. We first need to rescue the more than 400 hostages to prevent them of being victimized in retaliation. We are a powerful country but we are perceived as weak due to inaction. Since this is really an international issue, we need to include the support of other democracies.

We need to arm the merchant ships, and provide them with experienced Marines if necessary. If the ship is approached by pirates, just blow them and the 'mother ship' out of the water. Perhaps they will get the message as they did in the early 1800's off the Barbary coast.

It is time to end the piracy, and end our support of Al Qaeda!

The End of Hatred? ... Not While Labels Exist

With the welcome demise of Bin Laden, the world is rid of one more source of evil, but he is not the last. There are other warped minds who are ready and willing to take his place. They cannot see the world for it's beauty and wonder. Their obsession is to destroy all of humanity who do not agree with their miserable view of life. Those unfortunate beings are sores on humanity that will continue to fester and grow unless the source is addressed.

Hatred is not inborn; it is learned. Hatred is engendered by ignorance, cruelty and neglect of basic needs. Hatred begets hatred; ignorance begets ignorance. It allows religion or race to become a weapon that is exacerbated by power and greed. When people live in a society that preaches hatred for others 'not like them', whether based on religious, cultural, ethnic, or racial differences, it engenders hatred, and encourages those like Bin Laden, Hitler and others.

We need to stop labeling ourselves and others. Labels are different from attributes. An attribute is a description without emotional attachment. Male, female, blond, brunette, tall, short are examples of attributes; it is simply what we are. But when we apply negative feelings toward an attribute, it becomes a label which separates us. Skin color is an attribute; religion is an attribute. But when strong negative emotions are attached, it becomes a label and labels are learned. And labels separate us from each other.

Every society needs to reflect on its values. Every society needs to eradicate those labels. Every society needs to stop isolating its people from others who have different attributes. I believe that the United States is the beacon of freedom because we are an amalgam of many races, cultures and religions.

Every society needs to look upon the earth as a small speck in the universe that has the incredible ability to sustain life. Regardless of your religious views, or even if you are an atheist, you are here, and it is your responsibility to ensure that this planet is left at least as it was when you were born, if not better for your having been here. Bin Laden, and some other purveyors of hatred may be gone, but until this world no longer labels people and hates them for their differences, we will never be truly free.

Letter to Mark Kirk Regarding Current Fiscal Policies

Senator Kirk
First of all, I want to express my appreciation for your efforts to control government spending and waste. After all, the government is here to serve the people, not to 'Fleece' them by continuing tax and spend policies. I do not blame either the Democrats or the Republicans, since each has their pet agendas, but rather the pork and special interest projects obfuscated by being tacked onto bills that are assured passage.

I support the efforts by those Senators who are fighting to reduce spending. The multitude of taxes by various levels of government have gotten way out of control to the point that Chicago has placed a sales tax on the price of gasoline which already has included taxes. A tax on taxes! My understanding is that at $4.00 a gallon, about $0.90 goes to tax - that amounts to a 22.5% tax.

I will be attending a rally in Springfield this Friday to protest the fiscal policies of Governor Quinn and the State Legislature. It should be obvious to all levels of government that the people of this country are fed up with 'business as usual' and will support those in government who understand the upwelling of dissatisfaction with current policies.

As Thomas Jefferson passionately noted in his speech in Paris in November, 1787:
" ... God forbid we should ever be 20 years without such a rebellion. The people can not be all, and always, well informed. The part which is wrong will be discontented in proportion to the importance of the facts they misconceive. If they remain quiet under such misconceptions it is a lethargy, the forerunner of death to the public liberty. We have had 13 states independent 11 years. There has been one rebellion. That comes to one rebellion in a century and a half for each state. What country ever existed a century and a half without a rebellion? And what country can preserve it's liberties if their rulers are not warned from time to time that their people preserve the spirit of resistance? Let them take arms. The remedy is to set them right as to facts, pardon and pacify them. What signify a few lives lost in a century or two? The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. It is it's natural manure. Our Convention has been too much impressed by the insurrection of Massachusetts: and in the spur of the moment they are setting up a kite to keep the hen yard in order. I hope in god this article will be rectified before the new constitution is accepted." - Thomas Jefferson to William Stephens Smith, Paris, 13 Nov. 1787

Rebellion does not imply bloodshed, but thanks to our freedom to gather and demand change, perhaps we can move toward a more fiscally responsible government, freer of corruption and waste. A government of, by, and for the people.

Thank you again for your support of better government.

Labels

Discussions of politics, religion, and race define people as classes irrespective of their individual differences. You are either one of "them" or you are not. You are a Republican, or a Democrat, or possibly a member of the Tea Party. You are white, black, Hispanic, or "another person of color". You are born into or convert to a religion of choice. However, if you are of a minority faith you are in need of "being saved" by converting to "their" way of believing. What is the necessity of labeling people, other than to differentiate "THEM" from "US"?

I need to point out that everyone has attributes, and to differentiate that from labels. Attributes are physical features we are born with or acquire, (e.g. deafness, blindness, or other physical disability). Gender is an attribute. Although sexual preference is not a physical attribute, I must state that I believe, based on evidence, that people are born with a sexual preference as they are with handedness, it is not a "choice". Race is an attribute even when it is "mixed", and it is not a function of skin color. Politics or religion, however, are not attributes but affiliations. When we define a group based on one or more physical attributes or affiliations in order to discriminate, those attributes or affiliations then become labels. In cases when I refer to a label instead of an attribute of affiliation, I show that in italics.

Labels negatively affect much of our daily lives by emphasizing our differences rather than our commonalities. Divisiveness caused by labels becomes a wedge between people and separates each of us from getting things done for the common good. It should NOT be a matter of what is best for ME or my class, but what is best for ALL. Each group or class who want those things which are only to their advantage, or demean others, are contributing to that wedge.

For example, Congress often gets bogged down in "what is best for my Party" that they lose sight of "what is best for the people of this country". Blacks or other minorities want THEIR RIGHTS even if it means reducing the rights of others. Often Christians and Muslims feel righteous to look down on Jews and others 'not of their faith' who won't get into Heaven unless they convert. Religions split into sects which often differ in minor ways. And Fundamentalist Muslims seem to want EVERYONE to follow Sharia Law and refuse to consider the laws of the United States or other Democracies. Even Sunnis and Shiites kill each other in the name of Allah. Religious wars are endemic throughout the world and throughout history.

The world is fractured into ideological pieces. As long as people are "labeled" based on their differences, this world will never see peace. It will always be "US" against "THEM".

Should we take action in Libya?

The uprisings in the Middle East and Africa appear to bode well for the rise of Democracy and the hope for greater peace in the region. Peaceful dissent is necessary to inform government of the dissatisfaction of the populace. That is the basis of a Democracy.

Libya, however is entrenched by the insane megalomaniac Qaddafi who has no qualms about committing genocide against his own people. Genocide can not be tolerated in any part of the world. The United States must take aggressive action to stop it by whatever means required. Obama cannot waffle on this issue. Congress needs to put pressure on the President to get this done.

What next?

The uprisings in the Arab countries appears to bode well for Democracy; or it can open the door wider to radical Islam. According to what we see via the media, is that the people of Egypt and Tunisia have had enough of the corrupt regimes in their respective countries and want a free and democratic society. This implies that they, although mainly Muslim, are not looking toward radical Islam.

The recent decade has opened the world to the Internet. The availablity of information regarding the disparity of life in the west versus life in the repressive countries mainly through social media such as Facebook, Twitter, various blogs and email, has opened the floodgates of truth and freedom within those countries.

The United States needs to be wary of interference - either overt or covert - in that it might resurrect the idea of the debacle with the Shah of Iran which lead to hatred of the United States by the Arab countries, and may well have fed the rise of radical Islam. The concern is that the new government in Egypt continues to be an ally of the United States and of Israel.

This may be a turning point as dominos fall regarding the rise of democracy in the Arab countries, and could diminish the rise of radical Islam. We can only hope.

Response to a mailing from Mark Kirk

I received your mailing requesting a response as to what the U.S. should do about the political upheaval in Egypt. I am responding this way because the limited responses did not satisfy my feelings on this issue.

I believe that the U.S. response must be measured so that we are not perceived as interfering, especially since the possible fate of Israel could be compromised. Obviously, we would want Egypt to become a democratic state with freedom and human rights, but the risk of overt interference could give credence to the fundamentalist Islamic movement.

The primary issue, in my opinion, is that the new leader of Egypt must be pro-democracy and a supporter of Israel. Since there is no clear candidate at this time, we need to proceed with diplomacy and hope that a suitable candidate comes to the fore. It seems that the youth of Egypt would support a democratic society as opposed to an Islamic state.

Is our way of life doomed??

I just viewed a long sales hype from Stansberry Associates regarding the imminent collapse of the United States. Most of the sales pitch was the lack of confidence in the dollar by other countries, especially oil rich countries. Stansberry made the point that as the dollar is devalued, other currency such as the Euro, Yen, or Chinese Yuan will become the monetary standard of the world, or possibly a new world currency 'Bancor'. After about an hour of hype, he said that following his plan, that we could become quite wealthy in the failing economy. Sounds like a contradiction here. Here is some of the other issues in his statements - some are basically true:

The federal government is deeply in debt (about 13 trillion), and many states (including Illinois, of course) are pretty much bankrupt. Gas prices will go up substantially, as will other prices since transportation is a large part of our economy. However, I feel that the demise of the US Government is a bit over-hyped. The value of the dollar is taking a serious hit due to the failing economy, but we have recovered before (depression in 1938) and we returned to a booming economy. The problem currently is that we will not see a recovery for several years, and during that time unemployment will remain high and businesses will continue to fail. What I am most concerned about is that government's solution to the current crisis is to take over businesses and banks. That can be a dangerous precedent and smacks of socialism. If we, as citizens, are told it is to save the economy, while at the same time greatly increasing our debt, simple accounting tells you it is not true. However, I wish I would have bought gold when it was $32 an ounce in the 1960's. Inflated gold is common in times of a down market.

The same banks (too big to fail) who were "loaned" enormous amounts of money have reduced interest on savings and CD's to minuscule amounts - often less than 1% while shutting off mortgage loans to most borrowers because the interest rate for the loan is too low for their profit margin. That was not an issue when they could rake in the undervalued mortgages. Also credit card interest is climbing - often to 20% or better when they are paying their good customers less than 1%. The banks are not hurting - the investors and savers are. And, with government running the big banks, we are in danger of a worse economy. This is a Capitalist society where competition drives the economy by forcing businesses to build better products at reasonable costs. That is why we have been the economic leader in the free world. Hopefully, although we are losing the economic advantage, we will not lose our tenuous position as the beacon of Democracy in the free world.
